TIMELINE
1894 - Sheet music publishers hired an electrician to project a series of still images in live performances
1926 - Musical short films produced, as well as musical video series.  
1930's - Sing-along short cartoons were starting to be produced, such as Walt Disney's 'Silly Symphonies.' 
1929 - St. Louis Blues was a dramatized performance of the hit song.
1940's - For, the panoram visual jukebox, "promotional clips" were made, which were 'one song films.'
(1930's)-1950's - Musical films were made, as part of Hollywood's 'production machine.' (Eg, Madonna's 'Material Girl.'
1959 - Richardson invented the phrase "music video."
From 1959, the rise of 'music videos' occurred.
1982 - First music video banned from MTV was Queen - 'Body Language,' due to 'revealing outfits.' 
1985 - MTV launched VH1
1988 - Two of the most expensive music videos of all time released, Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream," which cost $7 million to produce, and Madonna's "Bedtime Story," which cost $5 million. "
1990's - MTV launches channels around the world 
Mid-2000s - Music videos stopped playing on most music video channels, and reality shows started playing instead; eg, The Hills, The City, Teen Mom etc...

  2. OK, there is clearly some good analysis of music videos here. Has this analysis been useful to you? How do you intend to use this analysis? Don't spend much more time on a history of music video - ask yourself is the history of music video going to help you make a music video?

    Some good analysis using concepts from last year and the Andrew Goodwin's contributions. I consider this to be a low level 4 at the moment. The application of other theorists would bring this up within this level.

    Try to approach analysis from the point of view that it is being used to assist you in your job of making a music video - part of your planning process will be to show how your research has helped you make a video.
